Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young child. Her aunt was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used to engage people. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate through artwork. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to look at the trash of the home of a juror. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as an intern at the studio that was small. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999.
